Am I the only one who DIDN'T think this was supposed to be a dark and gritty show?

I mean, a lot of people are complaining about how the show is "quirky" or at least trying to be. I assumed that was part of the point. I liked the quirkiness of the show, it's some of the fun shenanigans of the SHIELD you see in the comics grounded in the real world atmosphere of the MCU-verse. It's a fun spy show meant to build up some background for the main portion of the franchise, the MCU movies. It kind of felt like seeing the MCU tie-in comics, actually...

Nope. I expected something with a similar fun/quirky tone like Avengers. So FAR... that seems to be the case.

I think one of the problem is that MCU, on the surface, resembles the Ultimate Marvel world more, but underneath it really leans closer to 616, which is not nearly as dark as Ultimate Marvel. I don't expect Agents of SHIELD to be some gritty spy drama, I expect it to be an adaptation of the comics, just like the movies are. I mean, maybe it looks like Ultimate SHIELD but I absolutely expect it to act more like 616 SHIELD, just like MCU as a whole.

Then again, I thought Iron Man 3 was had so many funny moments it could practically be a comedy movie, for all the dark subjects/topics covered or hinted at in the movie. *shrugs*

I wouldn't mind if the show was quirky, but its trying too damn hard to be quirky instead of letting the quirkiness arise on its own. Its like they've speed marathoned all Whedon's other works and just stole the "quirky" bits of them without realizing it was the context and other characters that made the quirkiness work. It's what you would get if you asked someone to do a Whedon spoof or pastiche, except they've done it in all seriousness. And the characters are all too similar in looks too.

I guess this is just a subjective perception thing, then, because I quite liked it and I think it did well for itself. It could have been better, but it did well enough on its own. *shrugs*
