I don't know about overrated, but pretentious, that's not even a secret, that's basically an objective fact.

And I really like a lot of Grant Morrison's writing. I'm a fan of his. He's great. Great, but also pretentious, and kind of insane.

I do not know this man, but damn, those underpants look so wrong.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
He is seriously nutbags

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
he has serious nutbags, too.

This fellow once encouraged a wankfest - a LITERAL wankfest - to save one of his books from cancellation. (It wasn't cancelled in the end. Even he doesn't claim to be sure that the wankfest is what did it.) The shorts therefor don't surprise me. (How he fills them out does, slightly...)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
what did he do?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-30 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
kamino neko's description was the most accurate, literal possible description of what happened. Grant Morrison encouraged readers of the Invisibles to masturbate while focusing on a magical sigil to increase sales of the book.

When The Invisibles was in danger of being cancelled, he encouraged the readership to engage in masturbation as a chaos magic spell to save it. Presumably he himself participated.

The book ultimately continued.

Some is definitely overrated. (Arkham Asylum, for instance, is nowhere as good as it is ultimately important.)

I think Grant would be the last one to deny that a huge portion of it is pretentious as hell. You, I, and he would probably disagree on just which examples of his work were pretentious, but we could all probably agree on a vague approximation of the percentage.

Is he dressed like that on purpose?

I just don't understand what's going on in his comics half the time. I'm always feeling like I accidentally skipped an issue and he seem to like to write characters who are insane and this is depicted by having them babble nonsense and that stops being entertaining really quick. I know he's popular. Is this like an Emperor's New Clothes thing or is it just me?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a Grant Morrison fan and I still have no idea what was going on in The Invisibles. It's just that the bizarre, incomprehensible things that were going on were entertaining or interesting in the way that they were bizarre.

This is basically fact if you've read his script for Arkham Asylum. Like wow, it's embarrassing. He comments in the author's note how people in one of the boardrooms or whatever laughed their asses off at his ridiculous descriptions and now that the book is successful he says "who's laughing now, assholes?" and it's like... dude. The art did all the heavy lifting and obliterated most of the story you wrote. What the fuck are you smug about.

BUT I HAVEN'T READ ANY OTHER STUFF FROM HIM SO yeah.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
He's pals with Gerard Way I think the pretentious has rubbed off on him.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! Morrison was already well into his career before Gerard Way even hit puberty. But nice try...

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Overrated and pretentious? Maybe. Stone cold crazy and interesting? Yes!

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
I can't comment about a lot of his stuff, but I agree regarding his X-Men run. Back then I didn't know people were so crazy about his work, so when I found out I was pretty shocked people held that run in such high regard.

That picture is upsetting

What the hell is the context of (who I'm assuming is) Morrison taking this photo? Or was he just being insane?

Not entirely clear on the story, since there's only a little intro paragraph on the page the photo's from (which I found trying to find out how he got that scar on his belly)...online underwear retailer Wackyjac apparently got in contact with Grant and 'his assistant/partner-in-crime, Kristin' (to use their phrasing) and asked them to model in Wackyjac panties for a photoshoot.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
It is pretentious and he knows it. And his work knows it. That's kinda his secret.

And that photo is the least sexy thing ever but I would totally suck him off.
