Re: NS 4
I'd settle for snarky friendship though. XD

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 01:01 am (UTC)(link)IIRC, they didn't really much care. D/C took off pretty quickly after 4.01 but it didn't launch immediately into a megaship. It took it a bit to gain momentum.
Mind, by midwinter hiatus there was grumblings about D/C and "what's up with people fangirling over this Castiel character?" and an extremely high volume of people pshawing the whole deal as a mere fad that was due to fade out at any point (if you ever have an afternoon free, read over the SPN newsletter wank and their deadly insistence even so late as S6 that Dean/Cas was a fairly unpopular pairing that wasn't going to last and so therefore it made as much sense to separate out D/C as a pairing (similar to Sam/Dean) as it did Sam/Bumblebee The Transformer).
The flamewars broke out in full force by the S4-S5 hiatus though.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 03:40 am (UTC)(link)I don't have a link to any of the write ups, unfortunately, but discussions of it used to happen every so often back during the early days of the current SPN anon meme. Other arguments that the SPN newsletter people used were:
- "If we do a separate section for every minor pairing we'll have to do it for Sam/Mary."
- "We only separate out Sam/Dean because it's incest!" (This while including Jo/Ellen and John/Dean regularly in the general Other Slash pairing list.)
- "There's not enough Dean/Cas for us to bother." (This one fairly infamously came out right around a major D/C fest, resulting in a day when there was no Sam/Dean but something like 50 D/C stories and a general skew towards far more D/C fic than Sam/Dean fic ever since.)
- "It's our newsletter and we're just going to do it our way."
And no one could really argue with that last point and so as far as I'm aware, D/C is still grouped with "Other Slash" instead of having its own section. I haven't followed the SPN newsletter in a couple of years though, so maybe things have changed?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 05:27 am (UTC)(link)That's interesting though that you think that there's been more Dean/Cas fic than Sam/Dean. I'm relatively new to this fandom (since about 2011 or so) and I always wonder about people who say that Dean/Cas is just a vocal minority, and vice versa. Idk, fandom dynamics/history like that intrigue me.
Thanks for the info, though. None of that is really surprising, and I wondered why there was a separate Dean/Cas-only newsletter. That makes sense now.
Re: NS 4
(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)That's funny. The thing is, I'm not a D/C shipper and at the time this was all going down, I was adamantly in favor of a D/C subsection because I was sick of having to read through all the D/C titles when I was looking for non-D/C stories in Other Slash. I'm not as bothered by D/C these days but I'm also not subscribed to the newsletter either. XD
As for which has more, Sam/Dean or Dean/Cas, I think Sam/Dean probably still has more in terms of overall volume but that Dean/Cas likely has more in terms of output. It did for a very long time, anyway. Maybe that's switched and there's more Sam/Dean than Dean/Cas these days but I kinda doubt it. Sam/Dean has a much bigger representation in things like the SPNJ2BB but there's a lot more Dean/Cas than Sam/Dean on AO3 and that feels like where most fic is being posted these days.
Dean/Cas fans definitely aren't a vocal minority. I'd argue that people who like Sam, Dean, and Cas outweigh those who only like two of the three and hate the third. It depends on where you're active in fandom though as well, I guess. There are far more D/C fans on Tumblr it seems but there's still a sizable LJ presence for S/D. Overall though I'd guess that both shipping camps have roughly similar numbers, though both are always losing people and gaining new fans.
Re: NS 4
Because shipping isn't about text, it isn't about subtext, it's about the feels.
