On one hand, I agree with you.

On the other hand, unless you're one of the older folks on F!S, you probably didn't quite feel the impact of the film in its historical context (nor did I, I''m speaking as a humble ex-film student here).

It was literally unprecedented, both visually and conceptually, and it built on the tradition of philosophical sci-fi (like the original Solaris) that tried to use the medium to say something about human nature.

I think 2001 is perhaps a bit too pretentious and could have been more tightly written...but it's still a fascinating movie in its own right, and pretty much unique.

It's okay not to like it _ I know even some film professors that will secretly tell you they find it unwatchable - but I understand *why* people consider this to be such an important film.
