So I got a job, but I'm meh about it.

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2013-09-30 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking of posting anon, but fuck it.

As some of you know, I've been jobless for a year, and there's pretty much just nothing in my field. So I buckled, and accepted a stupid call-centerish job, which is basically making appointments for bank clients over the phone (I'm an introvert, and hate being on the phone). It's also totally below my abilities and the pay is shittier than my last job. The only good part is I get to sleep in and/or do freelance stuff in the morning, because it only starts in the afternoon.

I should feel happy, really, and I feel like I'm ungrateful (a friend actually pulled some strings for me at a temp agency, and the woman who will be my direct superior is actually really nice, so work circumstances could be worse). But basically my main thought is: I hope I won't be stuck there a year from now. So sigh...the money will be good, but I really have mixed feelings.

Crap jobs suck. I hope you find a better job somehow and soon.

Well, nothing saying you have to keep this job for life. Just think of it as a positive income source while you still work on finding either a job in your field or a job you actually enjoy.

I once took a job at JC Penny's for about nine months. Minimum wage, long hours, way below my education level, etc. I was kinda bummed at first, but then the job turned out to be kinda fun. Most of the customers were pleasant, and while I was working in the kid's section, one Grandpa-to-be was so happy he waltzed me over to the baby girl dresses. Most of my co-workers were nice enough, and management wasn't too bad.

Sometimes the jobs that you think will suck turn out to be better than expected.

That may be the cutest thing I have read all day.

It's still something, and getting a job right now is pretty hard. Call centers suck, but having money will be good.

You don't have to feel happy about working a shitty job. You can feel grateful that it doesn't suck as much as it could, seeing as you seem to like your supervisor, and grateful that your friend helped you get it, but you shouldn't have to feel happy that you are doing something you don't like.

Pretty much everyone who works in a call center wishes they weren't there, so it's not you wanting to get out asap is normal.

Better than no job because now you have money coming in, even if it's a less amount and you can refine your call control skills. Also, added experience for the resume

/how this introvert deals with her call centre job she hates that pays less than previous job.

Actually it does nothing for my resume. Frankly, it's one of those things I'll probably leave out entirely, because none of it are really job skills I need for anything I actually want to be doing, and I really don't care all that much about how 'm perceived on the phone in normal life.

But yeah, money is good. I'm keeping that in mind.

I felt the same way about my last retail job, down to the guilt about not feeling more appreciative of the person who pulled strings to get me in. Don't beat yourself up over it. A crap job doesn't magically become better just because it's the only job you can get.

Did I post this in my sleep?

Phones are the worst. You couldn't pay me to talk on one all day.

...And that's exactly what's happening to you! So I'd say you have the right to grump about it.

Re: So I got a job, but I'm meh about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
That does suck. I despise having to answer the phones, even if it's just to direct calls! Unfortunately, management wasn't the best at my last job, and every department was on standby in the event our receptionist and back-up receptionist were out of the office. What sucked ass was that the "schedule" was based on week and not departments' turn, so every time these people were out of office, IT WAS ALWAYS OUR DEPARTMENT'S TURN. And it would always end up being me or the other girl in our department.

It wouldn't be so bad except it's not exactly a basket of rainbows handling the front desk phone at a mental health facility. I know it's just directing calls, and I should be glad I wasn't in the call center, but when you're normally a "behind the scenes" employee and then you have to be in a position where you're dealing directly with current/potential clients, and you're not trained to deal with the 1% who are either irate or a sobbing mess (even though the other 99% are fine), it can be stressful as hell.

Sorry, don't mean to make this a post about me. I think my point is I can relate to being in a position that has nothing to do with what you were trained to do.

I don't think you're ungrateful to have very mixed feelings about that job. I hate being on the phone so much I'm not sure I could even take a job where I had to do it.

I've been working a job that is... I'm not going to say below my abilities but below... something... for years. To be honest I don't hate the job that much but the pay is shit and I'm in huge trouble for that reason. But now and then I do resent that I could be doing something "better" and I'm not. You're only human to feel that way.

:/ Settling sucks. I hope it doesn't grind you down.

You have a job. You don't have to be happy, but you should remember to be grateful for every day that it lasts.

Re: So I got a job, but I'm meh about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, same. It really sucks to be in a situation like this, but we all need money to pay the rent. And groceries. Maybe gas/a bus pass. So long as you're not complaining about it constantly, yer gud.

The point is, you're definitely not alone in feeling disappointed about having to settle for a job not in your field and way below you capabilities. Doesn't make it suck any less. But at least you're bringing home the bread while finding something better, so it's not a total waste of time(???).

In case you're looking for ways to make it less shitty (oh, just say it's unsolicited advice, we all know it), what's worked for me is I tried really hard to find things that will be great practice for when I do teach so I can focus on honing those skills. Things like reading body language in lots of people at the same time, remembering names, diction on the fly for managing situations (good and bad), and diplomacy and phrasing in discussions with supervisors (especially if I'm trying to steer them toward something I really want to change because I think a method I have will be most successful so I reeeeally want them to pick me).
