Is Sunshine really YA, though?

DA

Depends on who you ask. I'd say it's a fairly young heroine, though I can't remember her exact age. The plot's pretty simple, as is the writing. It could easily be categorized as YA.

Yet another DA. Pretty sure Sunshine is 25. And it could be classed as YA, especially considering a lot of the stuff that makes it into YA books these days. One of the things I liked about the story was that while there were hints at a love or at least lust triangle, it was not solved by making one of the sides of the triangle do something irredeemably evil or stupid. So many YA books set up a love triangle in which the 'unsuitable' guy is gotten out of the way by revealing that they're a cheating dickwad or a supervillain or both and it was a nice change to read a book where this didn't happen. Plus, for once McKinley's patented rushed ending actually worked in the book's favor. I love her writing but she's crap at endings; plot threads are just tied in a vague, messy bow most of the time.
