I really enjoyed Sunshine stylistically - I dig rambly first-person stuff - but it just didn't go anywhere, I guess?

I wouldn't have thought to bracket it with Twilight, though? I mean, no more so than any other part of the vampire genre. I guess because I read Sunshine before I'd heard of Twilight.
