I blame it on the origins of the story - the movie is based on a short story - not a full novel, just a short story. The full novel was a rewrite Clark did as a result of the movie.

Basically, Kubrick padded out a story that would have made a good TV show episode, and by doing so, bored many people to tears.

A couple of others have said the book was better, but I was even more bored to tears by it than the movie. At least the movie had pretty music. The sequel novels however are good, and the movie of 2010 was good as it didn't try to be a pretty arthouse movie and had enough actual story to fill a feature length show.
