Some of the people who care about visibility for modern adoptive families use fanfic/fandom to reclaim fictional narratives that already exist--in the same way that people try to reclaim poorly-written female characters, characters of color, queer characters, or what have you.

So someone watching Gothel, or Regina, might think "the problematic bullshit in this story is SO UNREALISTIC, if I had written it, it wouldn't be problematic, I am going to fanwank my way to liking this character even though, as written, she's terrible."

I can kind of understand this, since there are so very few stories about adoption that even come close to getting it right. I wish that reclaiming those characters didn't require feeling sorry for people who kidnap and emotionally manipulate "their" kids, though.

I also think that the people who WRITE Gothel/Regina types are more reprehensible than the people who try to get what they can out of those characters.
