How are you making actors lives harder? They don't even know you exist.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-01 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
because it's a well known fact that psychotic fans harass tv actors, whether it's showing them the RPF they wrote or being assholes to them on twitter

Yeah. And psychotic fans overestimate their importance in the lives of actors.

I could imagine some actors feeling really awkward about finding out people write smutty fanfiction about them and their co-workers, and it might start affecting how they interact with those co-workers on camera... but probably not that often. Usually actors are just like "wtf is fanfiction"

There's actually a book about the SPN fandom with a whole chapter of interviews with the actors about things like RPF and conventions (I read parts of it though my university because I'm a giant nerd)
People underestimate just how much they think about and understand these things. It's been their full time job for YEARS. It was my impression that they have a way better grasp on how it's not really about them than most fans do.

One thing that occurs to me is that they, of all actors, would have even better understanding of what's going on since SPN of all shows seems to have a very strong connection to it's fandom.

Yeah it must be more than 10 conventions a year at this point, which is crazy. They know what their fans look like IRL better than we do!
Honestly my feelings on that are mixed. The actors are smart well-paid professionals who know exactly what they're doing, but the fandom...

Yeah. I just hope for their sake they take everything fandom (at least the batshit parts there-of) says with a grain of salt.

Yep it's called "Fandom at the Crossroads". I thought it was pretty riveting! I have some chapters as PDFs if you're interested :)

Different anon here. Crazy tinhat fans drove Lisa Edelstein (Cuddy on House) off Twitter in a matter of days, IIRC. They threw so much batshit and vitriol at her that she had to bail. I think a ton of it was coming from the people who were known as "HuLi" shippers and thought that she and Hugh Laurie were totes in love and destined for each other. Or something.

Not being important in someone's life, does not mean you have no ability to make their life worse in some way.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, I never heard about that. Doesn't Hugh Laurie have a wife and kids?

I mean, I like real-people fic myself, especially if it's about people who don't mind or think it's funny (and they do exist) but I stay the fuck away from anyone's real life.

Yep, HL is married and has a family. I stayed a looooonnng way from the HuLi hangouts and tried to know as little as possible about what they were up to, but I was on Twitter when Lisa Edelstein opened a Twitter account -- and then closed it almost instantly because of the horrible shit she was getting from fans. It made me really sad.
