If they're done well, I love them. Like another anon in this thread, I reject that gender has an instrinsic factor in who we are -- I don't think it dictates who we are on a basic level, like our personality is our personality regardless -- but our experiences (which generally ARE different for each gender) plays a role in how we express (in some cases how we are allowed to express) that and may change the options available to us.

And I think examining how those changes can change the character without erasing and rewriting them is interesting.

This assumes we're talking about genderswap "X has always been the opposite from canon gender" fic, not "X is suddenly the canon-opposite gender because science/magic!"
