Yeah, that's awful.

I went to kind of a talk/lecture thing once that was basically about why Middle America tends to vote for Republicans instead of for left-leaning candidates - and I live in a very left leaning, coastal urban area (and am fairly left leaning myself), and people were constantly making jokes about Republicans, and middle America and how dumb and uncultured it was, and flyover country, and getting laughs about it. Jokes both from the audience and from the presenter.

And I really wanted to ask, "Do you think maybe part of the reason that these people don't vote for the candidates you want is because you cannot stop making fun of them and laughing at them?"

But I didn't.
