I definitely think it would have been great for either of the modern adaptations to make Mycroft fat. However, I'm actually more interested in either adaptation stating unequivocally that Mycroft is the smarter brother, but just lazy. That's something (as well as the fatness) Ritchie's otherwise terrible movies got right, at least.

However, I also love that Elementary's Mycroft wasn't in the secret service (as far as we know). I know it's a well established ACD fanon thing that Mycroft actually worked for the government, but I love the idea in Elementary that he a restaurant empire owner and skilled chef, and that he set up that atmospheric dinner for Watson, because it emphasises that his character is sensually hedonistic in a way that is completely different to Sherlock. But at the same time we know that Sherlock is an addict, so Mycroft's indulgence actually is a point of similarity between the brothers. And I think if you don't bring that across in Mycroft you can't believe their sibling relationship, which is a balance Sherlock BBC's Mycroft, though otherwise a great character, doesn't quite achieve. That's also why Elementary got it right when they made Mycroft be thin because of an illness he couldn't control rather than deliberate dieting. Mycroft? Diet? Pffft.
