Taking your mind off stress

(Anonymous) 2013-10-02 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Lately I'm always stressing out about one thing or another. Yesterday I volunteered to participate in a study so I had to answer a questionnaire and complete some computerised tests in a small, air-conditioned room that was tucked away in a corner of a university reserved for lecturers so it was really quiet. After I finished, I realised it was the first time in ages that my mind was completely focused away from the things that were stressing me out. I wish I could make a space for myself that's so quiet and isolated, but I don't have anywhere like that.

What do you guys do to take your mind off things that stress you out?

Go for a walk around the local woods or the park. It has that calming effect for me, but I don't do it nearly enough. I am very stressed too :(

The best Christmas present I ever got was a pair of really nice noise canceling headphones, the kind that look ridiculous to wear but sound amazing. I have a handful of songs that are good at making me breathe deeply and forget about where I am. The headphones are really key, though.

Cool story time: Today I tried to take my mind off of family stuff by watching TNG, but I'm at the end of season 3 and that's when the Borg reappear so I got scared and had to turn it off. Pffft. It usually works though (watching some of a TV show I like, not freaking out about the Borg), and so does listening to calming music.

Quiet places help me too when I can get to one. And playing my favorite songs helps -- I make mix CDs to take to work with me and it helps me get through the graveyard shift.

Does your university library have reading rooms similar to the one you were in? See if you can check one out for a while.

I finally went to a therapist for the issues I've been having about my mom's death (she died about a year ago and since I've been struggling with anxiety) and she suggested a technique called "grounding"- wherein you stop and focus on an object intently (mulling over details like shape, feeling, color, movement) until you come down. I think it works kind of.
