Short answer: They had the audacity to like something that was popular (sarcastic eye roll here) and fans did crazy things.

Long answer: It's a huge fandom, so it had its share of crazy. If you search through the Fandom Wank archive, you'll find the Snape Wives brouhaha, multiple entries involving the Harmonians, and Cassie Clare got her start there. Like many large fandoms, it gained a reputation for being unstable and drama-prone.

I was in fandom when the original Cassiegate stuff happened, so I know. Sometimes I got tired of my own fandom circles because of how nasty or wanky they'd be.I sometimes forget that's what people know, and not the great things that kept me in the fandom.

Don't forget MsScribe! And then there was the implosion of Gryffindor Tower (MsScribe had something to do with that too, IIRC).
