Dear anon who wanted the most obscure rodent I could find, I'm still doing research into what that is! :3

(Also, I realized that I wasn't sourcing my info, so please know that, unless I specify otherwise, I mostly get my information from wikipedia. I know it's not the most trusted source, but I hope you'll forgive me! :3)

Bunnies!

[personal profile] cuteanimalpics 2013-10-02 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
  • There are eight different genera in the family classified as "rabbits".
  • Male rabbits are called "bucks", and females are called "does". Unfortunately, baby rabbits (bunnies) are not called 'fawns' to complete the pattern, but are instead called "kits".
  • More than half the world's rabbit population is in North America, and they are also native to "southwestern Europe, Southeast Asia, Sumatra, some islands of Japan, and in parts of Africa and South America."
  • The Amami rabbit is considered endangered, due to only living on two small islands in Japan; Amami Ōshima and Toku-no-Shima.
  • Most of a rabbit's digestion takes place in it's large intestine, and cecum, this means they are "hindgut digesters". (I'm not really sure how to briefly describe the cecum, so here's a link, instead.)
  • Rabbits can see almost 360 degrees, with a small blind spot in front of it's nose.
  • It is possible to spay and neuter your rabbits if you don't want them to breed like, well...

Cute!

Oh, if you're looking for interesting rodents you could look up the Hero Shrew. It was features in this episode of SciShow. If you're interested. If you're not, good luck with your search.
