OT, but...

Has this show bothered to come up with a plausible explanation for why Ichabod gets to follow Abbie everywhere, even to crime scenes and on investigations? Not that I mind, but it's getting kind of silly. Also, is the police department still paying for him to live in a motel?

Before long, I hope we see them having to deal with getting Ichabod a legal identity, social security card, etc.

Not yet! I was actually paying attention since I thought they would have addressed it sooner then now. Even the new chef has basically hand waved them on investigating on their own.

I think he's kinda smart enough to do it, at least? Even (Johnny Depp)Movie!Ichabod was shown to be, okay...odd but he still had some brilliance behind his quirk. (And I think it was moreso because of Depp, if anything.)

No one else is really steeped in the madness that is the wonky supernatural and magic whatnot that series!Ichabod is, and he's still surprised at the crap that comes at him. Flaming hot axes not to mention rapid fire bullets.

ayrt

Obviously there are reasons why he should be involved for the good of the show - he's half of the main duo and his story is part of the larger story being told - but within the fictional world of the show, one would ask "Why is that civilian tagging along with the cop everywhere, even into dangerous situations?" It's fine if the police just say "Fuck it. Weird shit is happening and he knows more about it than we do so we'll use him, civilian or no." I was wondering if it had been acknowledged at all, or Abbie just started bringing him along all the time and everyone acted like this was a completely normal thing to do.

Sort of. Captain Irving seems to be in the mindset of, "Okay, Crane is the only one here who seems to know what is going on, so I am tolerating him playing detective to these supernatural murder cases. That is, as long as he stays subtle about it."

They made him a consultant, once the Captain acknowledged that Spooky Things Are Real.

The show is just a font of implausibility, you never know what's going to come out of Ichabod's mouth at any moment. (They didn't burn witches at all in the colonies, and not as late as the revolution, but they did burn slaves in the early years of the 18th century.)

Then again, on half the episodes of Bones I found myself asking, "Why does Booth have jurisdiction?"
