There's one more thing I can think of that seemed to piss some people off about the Harry Potter series: before HP, you did not see adults unabashedly enjoying genre fiction that was nominally written for kids/young adults. Or you did not see this nearly so often.

There was a subset of people who got really ragey over this, to the extent of blogging about how they longed to slap adults they saw reading Harry Potter books and tell them they should be ashamed of themselves.

There were also people who felt better fantasy works were being ignored in favor of HP. I often saw people say how they felt sorry for HP fans because they didn't realize how much better Terry Pratchett was than J K Rowling.

For what it's worth, I agree that he's a hell of a lot better. But I can't picture him thinking it's a great idea to go around and shove that in HP fans' faces all the time.

(Also Terry Pratchett isn't exactly unpopular in the circles I was in, so it was weird having people talk about him like he's an undiscovered gem only an elite know about. But maybe in some circles he is.)
