So how about that US government shutdown, hmm?

Is anyone here affected? How so?

Some of my brother's classmates got an extension on their assignment because it involved going to a US gov't nutritional website.

Personally? I'm not effected - yet. However a friend of mine is caught in a bit of a weird place since she has a renew her student visa and the office she uses was shut down during this, so she doesn't know what's happening with that.

My grandma, a WWII vet, is supposed to go to DC next week (she's never been there) for a veterans' honor trip. Which may wind up getting her and her fellow veterans arrested, since already we've seen some stuff coming up with veterans trying to visit the memorials set up in their own honor...

I wish the whole family could fly out with her, because there are twenty-plus able-bodied grandkids and great-grands who are more than willing to provide backup if anyone gets in her way.

This is what I get for living in Amurka's hat: not a damn clue what's happening.

Buuut after talking to some people to find out, I can relatively reliably say my family isn't effected in any significant way. Kind of one of my parents with some trainees at work who didn't complete training before this new round of nonsense, but mostly in feeling kinda bad that they can't be scheduled for work.

I have opinions, though, for sure.

I am not personally affected but a few of my friends are when it comes to WIC and childcare stuff. Another friend said they might have problems with food stamp programs but I never heard back about what happened there.

I had to look up some minor technical information on a government website and found that most of the site was "Temporarily Unavailable." Hardly the end of the world - it wasn't anything I needed right away and certainly wasn't life-or-death, but it was annoying. I can only assume it was shut down to annoy people so they get on congress' case to end the shutdown because the parts of the site I needed couldn't possibly require daily human maintenance.

I am not affected directly but I am damn angry about it.

I am a self-employed photographer. I spend a good portion of my time on the road, and then a good portion of my time planning my photography road trips. They are essential to my business. I've spent the past months planning this one only to get two days out and have to turn around because a good chunk of my stops were in National Parks that are now shut down. I'm pretty pissed at the waste of money, waste of time, and now I won't have a lot of stock for sale which will definitely put a dent in my income down the road.

"Non-essential" federal employee, so yup.
