So, awful teacher's assistant situation here. Three weeks, still awful (also I my pay is about $200 less than I expected).

BUT I was offered a job my a family member. I would be earning $600 more with MORE hours and like 100% less stress. But, they want me to start on the 14th. So if I give my notice tomorrow, it will only be a week notice.

I would also feel bad because the teacher is leaving for one or two months because of surgery and I would be leaving them like 5 days before he leaves. But I despise this job and honestly, have no control over the classroom.

Should I take this new job (which i will enjoy much better) and leave the teaching job in a lurch? And it one week's notice okay?

man given the amount of time you have spent bitching about this job - you need to leave it

Just leave the job and maybe you should tell them the problems you had with the job

I'd give them the week's notice and go, but I think you'll probably be burning bridges when it comes to teaching. If you're not going to be a TA again though, you're not losing anything.

This.

If you have aspirations of being a classroom teacher, you're going to need references, and no one at this place is going to give you one if you leave with a week's notice. If you do apply to teach at some point, I'd recommend leaving this experience off the record entirely.

All of what the two people above me said.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Just go. Let them know why you're leaving (like the problems you've had in the three weeks there) so they have at least some hint on how to fix things in that classroom.

Otherwise, you'll be unhappy as long as you're there and unable to change anything, one-week notice or not.

It's not working out and you'll gain nothing by staying, and the problems they have are not your fault. Move on. I hope the new job suits you better.

yes

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Take it. You don't like your current job and sooner or later it's going to show in the quality of your work or your mental health. Isn't the required notice time written down in your contract? It usually depends on how long you have been working.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
uhh, why are you even having to think about this? you'll hate yourself if you don't take the new job, you need to get the fuck out of dodge.

I can only assume that you're posting this because you're going to take the job anyway but you want people to tell you that you're not being a heinous bitch first. you have my expressed permission to be a dick and leave the school scrambling to find a substitute. they have five days, my school has had to do the same thing in much less time than that. they'll be fine.

Get out while you can. The economy is shit and I all but guarantee you that the school can find a quick replacement if they want. There are always unemployed teachers out there.

1 week notice is a bit shit, if necessary make as many apologies as necessary to try and salvage goodwill if yuo really want

Ah, at $600 more in earnings, you are an absolute moron if you don't take it, even if you could only give one day notice. You've seriously been offered a job with better pay, better hours, and a chance to de-stress from your current work and you're not sure if you should take it?

Start jumping up and down all ready!

Hell to the yes.

If you take it, you fuck them a little bit (a week's notice is still more than some people give when they quit, and in today's job market they'll be able to find someone, no worries) but if you don't take it, you fuck yourself over completely. That's not fair to you.

Take it, obviously.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
Either leave, or shut up about the shitty job.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes people talk about things you don't care about. No need to be nasty.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But there's something to be said for "Either suck it up or do something about it."

(Anonymous) 2013-10-04 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
You have to be careful because that COULD go on your file if you ever wanted to teach in the state again, or at least that particular system. Otherwise, I wouldn't stay. It sounds like you have no control because they have no control, and honestly, it was unfair of them to leave you with that classroom with little to no experience.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-05 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
Even if it doesn't end up in your actual file, you'd better believe that teachers and administrators talk to other teachers and administrators. A girl who student taught at my school had to leave the state to find a teaching position because of shit that went down while she was with us.
