You tell your roommate you had a seizure. You don't tell him you caused it (though you didn't really cause it on purpose), just tell him you watched something and it turned out to trigger you. But it's important for the person you're living with to know in case something happens. Write a note if you have to.

You really should see a doctor if you can, though.

OP

Okay, told my roommate. She was kind of freaked out, and agreed I should go to the doctor. And that she would check on me later. So uh. That's settled.

Thanks for your advice, I do feel a bit better now that someone knows. Still royally freaked out, myself, but a bit better.

Awesome!

Don't worry. She's freaked out because she cares.

Hahah yeah. She made me lemon verbena tea because she knew I would have a stomach ache (which I do), and then sympathetically laced it with rum.

Best roommate ever.

That is grossly irresponsible on both of your parts. You are in a delicate state post-seizure, and ingesting anything could in fact result in vomitting, which can sometimes lead to more complications. Especially if there was alcohol. You should have gone directly to the doctor so they can make sure your brain isn't (conintuing to) leisoning.

Yeah, I'm starting to thing this is a troll comment. If OP had done all this research into epilepsy to self-diagnose herself, she surely would have come across alcohol warnings.

OP

No, I truly and honestly did not see this. Most of the shit I came across was "You can have seizures if you're withdrawing from alcohol, or if you mix your medication with alcohol!"

Which isn't to say that that information isn't out there, just that I didn't come across it when I was looking at stuff. I really don't know what else to say.

I'm sorry for a lot of reasons that I'm uninformed and act stupidly, and that probably part of what was preventing me from thinking critically about alcohol and seizures was the after effect of the seizure. I am sorry about that, and if I were in a better state of mine, I would have had second thoughts.

I wish I were a troll. I wish I could just pack up after this and never look back. But tomorrow my roommate is going to hound me about taking me to a doctor to see if I have epilepsy, and that's the fucking future I get to look forward too.

This is fucking terrifying. It's not made better by being doubted by some of the only people you opened up to about it.

OP

I really get the feeling you're bringing this up not because you're concerned for my health, but just because you want to give me a hard time.

But just to make things clear she made it for me roughly four hours after I had the seizure. There was literally only a capful of rum in the tea, not nearly enough to cause any kind of cognitive impairment.

I really doubt my brain is actively forming lesions right now. Most sources cite that seizures only cause brain damage if they're particularly severe.

Also please stop scaring the shit out of me, I'm already scared enough as it is.

I hope that's not why they brought it up.

Anyway, I hope you do go to a doctor tomorrow, whether or not your roommate hounds you into it. It would likely be in your best interest. What above anon said about lesions can happen, though I understand they're often accompanied by intense, lasting headaches (like migraines, but with more severe consequences). Though I do know one woman with petit mal seizures which has resulted in nearly twenty lesions in the last 15 years, or so, it's more rare.

Regarding previous occurrence of seizures, there is no timeline for first instance; I've seen people everywhere between 7 y/os and 60 y/os get their firsts. One friend got hers at 22. (Seen as in been there during the episode.) I know you're concerned about getting your license suspended, but it really depends on the type and whether or not you can feel one coming on.

Sorry, this turned into something longer than I intended. Bottom line is go in to schedule some tests. Depending on your health care system, you'll need the GP visit to get things rolling, anyway, and they can check up to make sure you're alright, in the interim.

Breathe deep and don't look up any more strobe videos, k? ;)
