Does that stem from the old divide with Ireland and ~all Irish are redheads and all redheads Irish~?

I've only ever encountered that stereotype in the USA for some reason; I guess it's more associated with Scotland in the UK (and rightly so as Scotland has more redheads than Ireland). seriously one of my most common interactions with strangers is them going 'Are you Irish?' and me just saying 'No.'

Plus the Tartan army wear those ginger fizzy wigs, so they play that stereotype up as well.
