Back when northern Euro whites didn't really know any other races or why genetics, hair colour was a Big Deal, and there were stereotypes associated with them. (Still remnants of it in porn.) And people were referred to as nouns based on the colour of their hair. Or if their skin was slightly tan or particularly pale.

My mother is Black Irish, based on the old labels. She has blue eyes and the rest.
