I don't write, but for me the urge to read fanfic is quite different than the urge to read original novels and stories. A person who writes fanfic that I like may well not write original fic that works well for me as a reader. Especially if the stuff of theirs that I like is smutty. Different brainwaves entirely when reading.

I have an ex-bf that writes these epic fanfics that probably would sell well as tie-in novels if cleaned up a bit. I always felt bad for not liking them. It wasn't that he wrote badly, it was just that if I saw that same storyline in a book by someone I don't know in a bookstore, I would have bought something else. It just wasn't my thing.

Bottom line, the audience is different for different kinds of works. Maybe you could join some other groups who grok your original fic.

Yeah, there's this one fic author I started following because of their great porn fanfic. But then they switched to original fic and their style/process as well as settings are pretty different and it just doesn't work for me (also 1st person POV is a turn-off). I'm kind of annoyed at myself that I can't enjoy their stuff anymore.

That's just too bad, isn't it?

Writers are just there to provide your fan service?
