While I know it's always a matter of where you spend your time in a fandom, I noticed that there are sometimes people who complain about things that, supposedly, are very common in a fandom. And it's not just a single person, but several. And yet, I often sit there and think "But I've never seen anyone do that!".

Example: Night Vale fandom: I see a lot of people who complain about those evil whites who whitewash everyone and constantly attack the POC headcanons. Yet the only thing I see is SJWs "calling out" those who don't shade Carlos a certain way or who have white Cecil headcanons - I've never actually seen one of the (fabled and apparently numerous) white Cecil headcanon people harrass the POC headcanon part of the fandom.

What are some things in fandoms that a lot of people complained about but you never actually saw?

Pretty much any of the bigger fandoms I've been in; I'm pretty good at finding people who don't suck and like the thing I like so I don't really have to deal with it.

Like people who only like the first 151 Pokémon and are still somehow active in the fandom.

How- Just how?

They tend to just complain about every new change that the Pokemon games/anime/franchise go through.

Why stay though? The first 150 were so long ago. How can they stay in a place that in no way caters to them at all? There is nothing for them to like.

There are four major player groups of Night Vale fandom but you have to really be aware and in it to see all of them. I'm not surprised there are people who haven't seen any, actually.

And for me? Uh, ATLA fandom was rumored to be horrible. I just skirted the edges so I never saw any of it and was very grateful.

Nightvale fandom: Still shit. They are probably convinced those people are out there somewhere, and they need to be vilgilant.

It's cheating a bit to say all the whitewashers in Avatar (the movie notwithstanding) but there's mine. I saw one "whitewatshed" version of Avatar ever, and that was a specific Song of Ice and Fire sendup where they were all imagined in Europe (naturally Zuko and Azula fuck in this version)

Just about every tendency SJW cry out about. I never see them. Also, I don't see much of SJWs themselves, but that may be because I'm not on tumblr. [thank God. Though sometimes I hear about tiny AO3 fandoms having large following on tumblr and get envious. I'd like to have a fandom even if it meant to hear people complain that Elspeth is not feminist enough and that there are too few PoCs. On the other hand, they'd probably harrass the writers, and that's a huge NO...]

This isn't a fandom so much as a particular faction. I used to go to a Harry Potter website everyone said was horrible and snotty, but really, it wasn't that bad. I say this as someone who found out a bunch of people I thought were fandom friends didn't really like me. Yes, that sucked. But for our, say, 150 members, thirty of them were legitimately snobby assholes I'm thrilled to be rid of. The other 120 were fine and even wonderful. Most of the "snobbery" came from their insistence on "canon only" fanfiction, which I'll admit looking back maybe wasn't entirely fair as no fanfic is really canon, and their stance on a certain ship.

So there you have it. There was shit, but there was even more brilliance.

I haven't seen that one either. I have friends who adore Loki but they all admit he's an asshole. (To be fair I think it does exist and I just haven't seen it.)

You should try avengersanon on LJ--that place is full of it, especially in the earlier rounds. Also, the Thor kink meme.

The Destiel/ Anti-Destiel shipwars? Does that count?

Like, there's a tag for Destiel hate on tumblr talking about how Destiel shippers are awful and hateful, but they're not? They're the shippers that are the coolest with every Supernatural ship under the sun, from waht I've seen. It's weird. The anti-Destiel shippers seem to be the ones perpetuating this imaginary ship war while the Destiel shippers just sit back and chill and express their mild confusion over the whole "war."

ahaha, people complaining about evilv whites and whitewashing is all I have ever seen of WTNV fandom. Granted I'm not in it, but it pretty obviously depends on what circles you're following

When I was in the ATLA fandom I never saw Zutara fans being assholes about it, just people being assholes at Zutara fans/suspected Zutara fans.

To be fair, I'm sure there was some wretched hive of Zutara assholery that I wasn't seeing, but since I didn't see it the whole thing started seeming a tad unbalanced.
