The Dutch word for Dutch, however, is Nederlands.

The confusion comes from the fact that there was such a thing is "Diets", which was an umbrella term for middle dutch languages somewhere is the middle ages.

"Diets" and "Deutsch" come from a same root, loosely translated to "people" - i.e. "the language of the people" (unlike Latin).

This obviously can be confusing, especially for Anglosaxon speakers, because they basically adopted an old bastardized version of "diets" for a language now called differently.

But anyway, I don't think I could understand the Amish.
