How to stop trying to be happy?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've realized, due to a recent unusually dark bout of depression, that my problem lies in wanting to be happy. I know it's something to aim for, but I am not in a position where I can get or do the things I want, though for a while I was trying and failing.

What I need is to lower my standards, and stop trying to better things that aren't going to to get better. I just don't have any idea how. Once I got the idea in my head, it's gotten hard to give up on happy. :\

Any ideas?

uhhh are you seeing a therapist (if that's possible)?

I am, but I'm not scheduled for a while and I'm having a hard time right now. GC has helped a lot of people in the past, so I figured it was worth a shot.

Okay, so here's the thing people don't understand about being happy: for the most part, it's a temporary state. Nobody is 100% happy all the time unless they're heavily medicated, and even then it's a loopy kind of happy. There is no checklist to happiness. There is no boss level. There is no trophy.

So. Aiming for eternal happiness is kind of a pipe dream to begin with. Once you accept that, aiming for doing things that make you a little happy is a much easier thing.

Giving up on happiness sounds really bleak, but how about aiming for survival instead? Tell yourself you'll take it one day at a time. You won't expect to be happy, but you'll try to get by and be open to it if it comes along. It helps avoid the guilt one feels over failing to be happy when you can just say, another day's done, I made it.
