But why would you sell an actor cat?

Huh... cool. I'm more interested in the cats than the boys but that's a nice website.

For the same reason people can, and do, adopt retired racing greyhounds [or horses, for that matter]? Namely, they no longer work [for whatever reason] so they're adopted out to people to live the rest of their lives in a good home.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-10-06 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. I would just think... the trainer would keep them.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-06 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
They'd probably have way too many animals in that case.

Oooh. Huh. Okay then.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-10-06 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Unfortunately, many of these animals aren't really pets and their owners can't afford to keep them when they're no longer making said owners any money. =(

This is not to say the industries are horrible. For greyhounds, I don't know much about it, but the racing leagues work closely with rescuers to make sure the dogs are able to get adopted, and they are well-treated and socialized as they are raised.

We adopted a retired greyhound in May. She is wonderful. <3

I... see. Hmmm, I need time to think about this.

Wow, congrats on the dog. :)

Thanks! She is lovely!

She knows she is beautiful.

(Do you know how to use html to make an image smaller? I'm pretty sure you can do it, but I've never done it.)

Honestly, the only way I do it is by pasting the picture into a new journal entry, clicking on the picture, than clicking on the picture icon (the one that looks like mountains), and letting the journal do the work for me.

I didn't even know you could do that in journal entries lol.

I was gonna wait to reply for you to make it smaller but, eh, it's okay.

That is a very cute and beautiful dog. I haven't seen that breed that color before. She looks nice.

Sorry ;-; I still don't know how to do it using html

Thanks! She's kind of a diva, but she's also a real sweetheart. Black-and-white mixed is an unusual color for greyhounds. It's not uncommon for them to be mostly black or mostly white, but a mix of the two is unusual.

It's fine. I sent you a pm for an easy way to do it. I'm not good with HTML either.

Ah, that explains it then. Well she sounds fantastic.

Aw :)

My family used to foster - except we had a bad habit of falling in love with said fosters and adopting them ourselves. Your girl looks like one of the very few we actually let go, and I still miss her: http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?z=QCyfI6&d=sassypants+lily&x=0&y=0

Thanks - and congrats again on adopting your girl!

One of the things I miss about working at PetSmart was the weekly visits from the greyhound rescue. It was just an accepted fact of life that all the employees were going to have occasional bursts of uselessness on Saturdays because IF I DO NOT PET THIS DOG RIGHT NOW I MAY DIE.

!!

What area are you from? Many of the pet stores around where I live host meet and greets for greyhounds (which we now participate in because we have one and she is super friendly!)

I know what you mean! They are by and large a very sweet breed. They're very docile and some are shy, but rarely if ever are they aggressive to humans, and many love attention and meeting people.

Southern Arizona. We also have a lovely Greyhound Guild booth at the Renn Faire every year.

Ah, that's so cool!

Far away from where I am, but I guess there are greyhound rescues all over the place. Which is awesome!

It fits into the Renn theme really well, too, doesn't it? Greyhounds are a very old breed and must have been used for hunting in medieval Europe. (Correct me if I'm wrong. I think I've heard that.)

I love this :)

I work a drive-through right now, and if barking has been heard over the order intercom, the other employees have learned to stay out of my way, lest I bowl them over in my haste to be the one to take care of the customer. (And if the dog isn't hanging out the window, begging for attention, I feel a little cheated.)

I LOVE dogs who come through drive-throughs! Met so many sweet dogs that way!

One of my favorite customers walks with the aide of a guide dog. Whoever's on duty usually has him go sit down and brings the food to his table - and since she's not 'on duty' once he's settled, she's learned to expect bacon and belly-scratches when we bring out his tray.

Sadly there are still a lot of rogues involved in breeding greyhounds, at least in the UK, and dogs do still get dumped (generally not the ones who have had successful careers, though, it's the ones who are never going to make it).

That's really too bad to hear. :(
