It's "Panoramix" in the original, and most latin-derivative languages kept it that way. Getafix it's quite clever, though XD I'd say even superior, given what he does with the magic potion and the villagers.

I'm reading the wiki with the names of the characters in English now, looking for puns.

The English one was full of them. Again, it took me a while to understand 'Dogmatix' (I got the 'dog' part, but not the 'dogmatic'/determined part) and 'Geriatrix'. And, actually, Obelix as well. In my defense, 'obelisk' is a word it takes a while to come across.

Oh, we had loads of puns too :D I like how they managed "Dogmatix" (Ideéfix/Ideafix= "To have a fixed idea") to include "dog" in it. The other translations I've seen, I'm not so keen on. But maybe that's my bias :'D This comics were my childhood.

It was the animated movies that were my childhood. Comics of any stripe don't seem to sell well over here, for some reason.

I love the name of one of the Corsican characters in Asterix in Corsica: "Ocatarinetabellatchitchix" (because of a Tino Rossi song).

The Asterix and Cleopatra live action movie is full of puns too!

"Ocatarinetabellatchitchix" was kept in the Spanish translation too! :D Precisely because of the song, the book has a footnote.

In English he's Boneywasawarriorwayayix (an English sea shanty about how cool Napoleon is), which is so forced, stupid and contorted compared to the French pun I truly love it. Normally the English translation is amazing quality, but on the Corsica one, since British people do not know SHIT about Corsica except for 'wasn't Napoleon born there?', she probably spent the whole book drunkenly writing down Napoleon puns on beer mats and bawling. (She admitted to Goscinny she had to get extremely drunk to come up with the rename for the British chieftan Zebigbos, who ended up as Mykingdomforanos.)

No comments on "Boneywasawarriorwayayix", but... but why couldn't they keep Zebigbos? Dude's actually based on Churchill anyway. Pardon my ignorance :(

I'll just dump a scan here (it is so cool that we're all having these awesome conversations about the names of fictional Celts because someone can't keep quiet about their bad bard bondage fetish, anyway):

I'm loving this conversation, tbh. It's the only good thing that has happened to me today. So thanks for the scan <3 It clears up a lot of my doubts (and it's really funny, poor Bell. You weren't exaggerating about "getting smashed to find a name".)

You should probably try reading the English translations if you haven't (they're all available in PDF form in a torrent on a certain piractical site I am not suggesting you go on). Goscinny said they were his favourite translations and so much work has gone into making everything just right. It's probably the highest quality translation of a pun-based comedy I've ever seen, and I play a lot of translated vidya.
