Because Loveless doesn't try to sell it to you as a "omg so cute and perfect romance!1112! They love each other and will wait 'till marriage!~<3".

Loveless acknowledges how DEEPLY fucked up is everything (to the point it's one of the few mangas I've seen in which the main character goes to a therapist. Yes the therapist also wants to bone him, but let's not look at that too closely either). It's still not clear if Soubi wants Ritsuka for being Ritsuka (HE'S TWELVE OH GOD) or if he wants him because Seimei ordered him to... there are creepy incest vibes from Seimei, there's domestic abuse from Ritsuka's mom...

Seriously, the healthiest relationship on that series is that of the female Zeroes, and even they had more issues than National Geographic. And they got the fuck out of the story as soon as they realized the only way they could be happy together was if they cut ties completely with the people driving the plot.

in the German translation they aged Ritsuka and his classmates up to 14, just too hardcore

but yeah, ia, the whole manga pretty much is about how fucked up every relationship in it is, so it definitely gives off a different vibe

They did that? I get the reason they would but... I'm sorry, really, but it's as stupid as the USA dub of Sailor Moon that said Haruka and Michiru were cousins.

Loveless clearly isn't meant for a young audience, so there shouldn't be "impressionable children" to mindscrew with the age of the protagonist & classmates.

You can also, if you're inclined, interpret Soubi's inappropriate behavior around Ritsuka as a result of his own abuse. I guess that's the thing with Loveless; since we're on the topic of teacher-student underage relationships, the one in this series is presented as traumatic sexual assault that left the victim fifty kinds of fucked up well into adulthood. I had to stop reading this series due to lack of updates, but when I did, it was definitely out of a sense of fascination with how fucked up things can get, and the vain hope that the few characters I liked would make it out okay.

Seconding everything :( The dynamics of abuse, and the cycle of abuse repeating itself are really well written. Though I left when (is this a spoiler? It has been years, but the mangaka is SO DAMN SLOW...) Soubi left Ritsuka to go with Seimei.

So I don't have any actual hope that the characters I like are alright with the exception of the Female Zeroes. I'm currently plugging my ears with my fingers and going "LALALA CAN'T HEAR YOU, THEY'RE ALL ALRIGHT".

Haha, oops, I never got that far myself, but I'm totally okay with spoilers, especially for series I have no intention of ever going back to. That... does kinda suck, though :( I can't claim to be a Soubi/Ritsuka shipper but I have a huge amount of sympathy for both of them and want Seimei as far away as possible (actual death too much to ask for?). Ritsuka in particular, as back in the days I really felt I'd never found another protagonist I empathized with as much as I did with him.

OH MY GOD I'M SO SORRY! DDDDDDDDDDDD: I hate-hate-hate spoiling people on... anything! That issue was out two years ago, if my memory doesn't fail me, so I thought it was safe... oh goddddd ;; Sorry!

I feel you on Ritsuka :( I wasn't really a shipper, either, and not out of morality or anything. I just felt that they didn't really click, y'know? And yes, Seimei should go actual-DIAF. I RPd Seimei back when we didn't really knew what his deal was and even then, he was a creepy motherfucker and having him in my mind was disturbing (but interesting, I must concede).

Don't worry! You did warn for it and I could have stopped reading, but really this saves me the trouble of going back to find out what's become of my faves. The answer is, of course, bad things. I really shouldn't be surprised.

I liked Seimei as a contradictory enigma... and then he showed up in the manga. Actually, no, I did like it when he attacked Ritsu. You can probably guess why.
