they made the girl have a one-way crush on the teacher. the teacher found it cute and indulged her (like, kindly accepting the small gifts she brought him to his desk but in a sort of teacherly way?) but didn't really return the feelings

I only read the manga once or so, and I watched the hell out of the anime as a kid, so this is pretty much all I remember about it. Is that why I still think of it as cute in a purely cartoon way instead of being horrified like everyone else? I do remember the manga getting a little weird sometimes.

i'm in the same boat, so probably yes! i remember being fairly disappointed when i found out about their relationship in the manga, but the sweet memories of the anime help me forget

They kept her crush, but not his. So it was a cute kid crushing on oblivious teacher, instead of teacher grooming cute kid.
