Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be that much in the English language about it. I found this on Google, which renders a crappy translation if you'd like.

Otherwise, some of the specific stories my friend told me (that I cannot test the veracity of, as I do not speak Japanese and am not terribly well read about regional history):

-Inunakimura is translated into "Crying Dog Pass". This is because the hills surrounding the train tunnel echo with the cries of the dead laborers who built the pass. It's a very dangerous area with loads of mudslides and rock slides, and lots of people died in its construction. The cries sound like howling or yelping dogs, hence the name.

-Passage into the village through the old tunnel is prohibited, due to the many accidents that occurred there. The government put up a huge wall to keep people out. This somehow attracts loads of trouble, including thefts, rapes, murders, and other crazy shenanigans.

-Past the tunnel is a forest. This is a dangerous place to be. Ghosts and demons live here, and strange black shadows flutter from the tree tops to land on unwary travelers. Sometimes, you may find denizens of the village in the forest-- these people are never to be trusted, as they will lie to you about where you are and where you can go.
