So you want to be a wizard series by Diane Duane. It's about a boy and girl who find out they are wizards. It's very nerdy and kick-ass. There are talking cats, singing whales, alien christmas tree wizards, a transcendent pig, and lots of kick-ass female characters. The stories have very little romance but some of the later books do have important minor character deaths.

Oooh, I had forgotten about the Wizard series. I loved reasing that as a kid. I've pretty much forgotten what happened after the first book. So, I'll definitely looking into re-reading the series
