not to mention, referring to her as a boy brings out all sorts of unfortunate implications about girls who don't like dresses. girls who aren't feminine are no less female than girls who are.

You'll notice, nowhere in the secret did I refer to her as a boy.

But implying she might be trans isn't much better, tbh. The only reason the whole "is she trans?" debate started is because happens to be a little girl with short hair who liked wearing pants. Like...wtf? Can't people see how problematic that attitude is? Nobody wonders whether or not Suri Cruise is trans. And why? Because she fits into gender stereotypes and wears lots of dresses.

Dude, her MOM was all "She wants to be a boy." That's where that comes from. It's not OP just deciding that for themselves. And it's no less transphobic to say "we should just always assume everybody is cis until we find out otherwise," than it is homophobic to say "everyone is straight until I know otherwise."

that still doesn't necessarily mean anything, though. when i was a kid, i wanted to be a boy too. i wanted to be called by a gender-neutral nickname, i refused to wear skirts or dresses, and i whole-heartedly wanted to be a boy because as far as i could tell from books and tv and movies, boys were the ones who got to do all of the cool adventuring stuff. i wanted to do those things, so i wanted to be a boy, and i wasn't the only one of my group of friends who went through a phase like that. in the end, none of us turned out to be trans.

it's a little ridiculous to be making judgments about the gender identity of a little kid who could easily just be trying out different things to find out what fits her best. she could be trans, she could not be. the only one who can say that for sure is her.

da

So did I and I did grow up to be trans. Your experience isn't more relevant than mine. Why don't you take your own advise and stop making judgements about this kid whose gender we don't know and it might as well NOT be a girl going through a phase?

that's exactly what i said - it's ridiculous to be speculating either way. just let her do her thing, whether she turns out to be trans or not. you can't judge just from her actions whether she's trans or cis until she actually says what she is.

....It's not exactly transphobic or homophobic to assume everyone is cis or straight since, last I read, about 5-7% of the entire population is homosexual and maybe about 0.05%, if that, is transsexual. The numbers are way higher in fandom but, in life, not a bad bet.

But if a parent goes around talking about their teenage daughter's girlfriend, assuming that the girl might not be straight isn't a chauvinistic try to erase every straight woman who kissed a girl and liked it.
