Fanfiction is actually not illegal, unless you release the work for profit.

Even so, do you really think that show producers and authors would waste their time going after fans writing fic for fun, who aren't making any profit off it? They aren't losing any money. It's free advertising for them. That's exactly why so many producers and authors like it when people write fanfic and draw fanart.

They already have the right to request that people not write fic about their creations if they really want, but there are very few authors and creators who actually do so. Like the above anon said, they aren't dumb. Angering the fanbase could potentially cost them viewers/readers, which WOULD lose them money.
