Depends on the author, tbh. I've known [published] authors who picked a name simply because they thought it stsounded good, not because of anything to really do with the character. So counting on people to pick up on something like that, unless explicitly stated in the actual series is a bit silly on the creator's part, imo.

And pulling in the dark thing doesn't really clear things up either, since "dark" can cover so much.

Note: Not arguing that he's poc - personally, I don't generally picture characters anyways...and I kind of really like the headcanon he's the Carlos from Magic School Bus. Just pointing out that expecting a name and a one word description to make things obvious is really, pretty silly - particularly for a series set in a country where you can have someone whose black named Heidi Rodriquez. [And yes - that's really someone I knew school.]
