Original (online) fiction

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone read "original fanfiction"? I mean, original characters and story, no fandom, still available for free online. Sometimes when I get tired of reading what feels like the same thing over and over again, I go to original fiction.

If you do, any recs? Particularly slash or femslash.

Re: Original (online) fiction

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone really call that "original fanfiction"?

Re: Original (online) fiction

(Anonymous) 2013-10-07 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Adultfanfiction.net has an "original" section... if that counts. :P

Re: Original (online) fiction

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I think the idea is that it's written in the same style as fanfics, posted on fanfic/similar style websites, follows similar tropes, etc. Also, implies that it's free.

Just "fiction" might imply a published novel? idk.

Original slash is a thing, it borrows the genre specifics from slash fanfiction, but does it with original characters. http://the-slash-pile.livejournal.com is one popular source, http://s2b2.livejournal.com another.

I recommend anything by Cordelia Kingsbridge (http://ckingsbridge.livejournal.com/). She does lots of slash, and updates every week. She's got two completed "novels" - I recommend Close Protection.

I do occasionally. I mainly started because I wrote it myself and I started looking and giving feedback on some other works in hopes mine would get read. Now I do it just because discovering something new is interesting.

I love that A03 has a section for original works.

I used to, way back in the day. All the stuff I liked got taken down or lost though.

I used to read this fantasy story about a royal family who had control of the elements. One of the sons was looked down on because he didn't control a normal element- he could on make clay balls or something like that. It was really interesting. Did anyone else read this? It was pretty popular, but the author took it down because of plagiarism.

I used to read a ton of original slash fic and have several bookmarked at FictionPress. I haven't looked for any new ones for awhile. I'll look through them later and link some for you. Any tropes you don't like? I read a lot of fic set in high school and I know some people don't like that.

Can't speak for the OP but I'd be interested in high school fics. :)

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty open to anything, especially if it's gay, but I don't really care for fics with kids under, like, sixteen. If you had any good high school ones, I'd love to read them!

Back in the day I used to read My Toaster Thinks I'm Crazy and something with post-it notes in the title, I think. Both were on fictionpress. The second one was an angsty mess from the get-go and I don't think it would hold up to a re-read, but I have fond memories of the beginning of MTTIC (inanimate objects talk to the main character!), though that took a turn for the fucked-up and angsty in later chapters as well (they talk to the main character because he's legit crazy! Also, here's an eating disorder because your food fucking talks to you).

Ah yes, Stupid Post-It Notes. That was one of the first ones I ever read and I'm still sad it'll never be finished. Strangely enough I've never given it a re-read. it's so damn angsty.

I did once and I quite enjoyed it but never found it again

Like 10+ years ago, something about wolves, main char was a girl, something about a hill and a woodsman/woodcutter dude living on it and there was music playing in the background and I recall enjoying it but nothing about it :C

"Original fanfiction"?

If you like original m/m or f/f stories there's the Nifty Archive, but lord knows you'll need to wade through more shit than on ff.net to get yo the good ones.

Holy crap this is fortuitous-- my sister just published her first online short story on Amazon. It's kind of a ghost story type deal, if that floats your boat.

The Slavebreakers by maculategiraffe is fantastic. Original m/m fiction set in a society where sexual slavery is legal. She also has an account under the same name here on DW.

Re: Original (online) fiction

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
SECONDING this one. Slavebreakers is surprisingly touching.

There was another slave one with a similar premise... I think it was called "At His Throat, A Promise". Also very touching, but last time I checked it was taken down, I think to be published/sold.

:( only sad part about original fiction, and you can't even be mad when authors do that, because good for them.

Recs

Okay, not sure about the ages in all of the teen ones but not all of these feature teenagers. Also, some are angsty and some are not. All of these are complete.

1. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2147638/1/Wyatt
a lonely teen is looking after his ill mother. His life is pretty crappy until two boys move in across the street. Contains drug use and is pretty angsty but worth it.

2. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2945191/1/Words-and-Their-Digestion
this is a love triangle of sorts with adults. The title refers to a thing the main character has where he can't say certain words.

3. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2727527/1/They-Call-Him-Lovely
Very sweet. Author's summary: Andrew expected the worst when his brother’s team found out he was gay. But instead of beatings, he gets kisses, instead of teasing, pet names. He’s their extra mom, their wife. He just has to figure out which one means it when they say ‘I love you.’

4. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2977745/1/The-Side-Effects-of-Forgetting
kinda cliche since it involves amnesia, but good anyway

5. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2584832/1/The-Band-Geek-s-Dictionary
A band geek crushing on his best friend, a fellow band geek

6. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2738995/1/Tasting-Shadows
One of my absolute favorites! A guy has always been afraid of the dark and he's about to find out why.

7. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2248687/1/skye
It also has a one-shot sequel. Author's summary: When his exgirlfriend refuses to accept defeat, Jason finds an unlikely ally in the form of Skye, a strange, confusing new student who never fails to leave Jason feeling...strange

8. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2774305/1/Rumors-About-You-and-Me
Another favorite. Author's summary: Brandon is your average gay high school student. Bad at math, he finds a tutor named Matt. A misconstrued conversation has rumors flying that he and Matt are involved. Everyone thinks they're dating. Should they be?

9. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2522360/1/Love-is-Strange
Author's summary: When a boy moves with his mom from his home in the crowded city to a small town in the middle of nowhere Texas, what will he find? Who knows. Maybe a love that he thought could never happen, and probably shouldn't be. But love is, well.. strange.

10. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2868461/1/Guilloche
Adults. Author's summary: Nate is a carpenter living in his inherited home by the lake with just his large dog for company. He makes no excuses for who he is or how he lives...except, perhaps, how he feels about the 'one who got away' in high school.

11. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/1440549/1/First-Person-Perspective
this one is a mystery too! Five teens get sucked into the story they're supposed to review for an English assignment.

12. http://www.fictionpress.com/s/2697035/1/Are-You-Together
really long and the writing isn't consistent, but it's a favorite. Author's summary: Pete wasn’t looking for a new boyfriend. He wasn’t looking for anything, but suddenly he’s interwoven so deeply into the lives of Rick and his three small boys that he can never escape. Not that he wants to.

I hope you enjoy at least some of these :)

I've also read some good original m/m at crvboy.org

If you like vampires, I recommend:

One of the best fics I've read for free online. It's slashy, and VERY kinky, just fyi.

+1

I write it but I don't read much online because I'm lazy, work too much, and again, am too lazy to dig through a lot of original fiction to find good stuff.

This thread made me remember another original fic I liked, The Long Way by DomLuka. It's been ages since I read it, but given the number of rec lists I just browsed in hopes of jogging my memory to find it it better be as good as I remember it. :P And there's a sequel too! I have no idea if I read before or not.

Here's the author summary:

When a secret gets out and things unexpectedly go awry, Owen finds himself living with his twin brothers, an ideal situation for him. But not everything's perfect under the surface, and as he falls for his neighbor, makes new friends and learns to trust again it's a long road to making things right.
