Oh god, I know it, I was trying to save some modicum of face. It's horrible, but I adore it, and I keep reading it. The mystery is transparent as air, the structure of the whole story is atrocious, the language is flowery beyond reason, and yet...huff. I'm a lost cause.

I am, however, finding some excellent fic, you are right about that.

And I'm starting to get the friends and lovers concept; I'd definitely been laboring under the impression that the two are mutually exclusive.

NA

The fact that it's terrible might actually help you. Then you can still make fun of how terrible the story is, while enjoying it at the same time. That may sound weird, but it is totally a thing that can happen. I have friends that I love to mock/enjoy silly fic with, maybe yours will be the same way!

Yeah, it's a common trope, and slashers do it too. But if you lose the friendship with these two, you lose everything that makes them work.
