Drabble confusion

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Many people do not use the word drabble to refer to a story of exactly one hundred words. I get that. Whatever. But when people are using the word drabble to refer to a story of ten thousand words, what the heck does that mean? What am I supposed to expect going in?

...it means they don't know what a drabble is.

I'm not picky about it. I think if you write 120 or so words you can still call it a drabble if you want, unless it's in a community or a competition with specific guidelines.

But 10,000 words is a novelette.

I hate when people do that. One author I know labels anything under 4000 as a "drabble" because it's "not a real story". It sounds pretty pretentious.

You can expect a bad fic, most likely.
