"not supporting a man's story"? did we watch the same movie at all? to me the whole movie was a gross man's fantasy with mechas. one of the most sexist recent movies I've watched. Mako was the fucking token woman! her entire characterization revolved around giving her value to the men inserting themselves into the main character (ooh, she's strong, she's intelligent too, must get her!). she didn't get a narrative arc beyond "she so scarred, she so vulnerable inside, manly man must fix her", and just putting "Mako" and "not supporting a man's story" in the same phrase is like...wow, I don't even know what to say if you can't see that.

I can agree that passing the Bechdel test is not necessarily a seal of approval of feminism, and I can agree in using both as a more accurate test (though, as many people before have said, that is really not the point of the Bechdel test), but Mako does not pass either. People can cream their pants over her anyway, but let's not pretend that she was a good character.
