You can't blame it entirely on the actor's fangirls, though. The Ricardians are so nuts they create their own vortex of insanity even in the absence of popular media, and they've been doing it for YEARS. It's not even an ignorance of history, it's bog-standard denial.

The Ricaridans were acting like crazed fangirls long before fangirling was even a thing.

P.S. I am ridiculously Lancastrian and it's all Shakespeare's fault, actual history be damned.

NA

P.S. I am ridiculously Lancastrian and it's all Shakespeare's fault, actual history be damned.

I'm the opposite, Shakespeare's version is so biased I want to push the other side. I'm contrarian that way.

... yeah, that pretty much forms the basis of the Ricardians' argument, too. "But Shakespeare was an evil Tudor propagandist so that means Richard III was totally innocent!"

AYRT. Oh, sure. That woman from the Richard III Society who was on all the programmes on British TV when they found Richard's body - blimey, issues.

But the "the actor's handsome [and he is] so his character can't be a usurper" comments really got on my wick.

Lultwut.

I mean sure in reality he wasn't as old/ugly as he's generally depicted. But just because the actor playing him is pretty for a change doesn't erase that the real Richard seizing the throne in 1483 wouldn't have happened if he didn't want it to, it's not like someone held a sword to his throat and demanded he take the crown or else. And I'm about as Yorkist/Ricardian as you can get without being a member of the society. I despair that I rarely seem to encounter people with a more balanced view of him.

And yeah Philipa Langley made me cringe hard. Especially storming out of the room and wailing about how awful it was what they did to him. Well yeah, that's something called medieval warfare. It ain't pretty! Plus Richard wasn't the only one to die horribly in that period.

Richard got off easy compared to people like Edward II.
