Mostly because I write A/B/O in order to subvert or critique archaic gender essentialism, and if I did it without the veneer of fantasy biology, it would get preachy. Also, figuring out how reproduction works when you have a species with basically six genders is hilarious fun.

You seem one of the exceptions, then. Most of the A/B/O fic I read fetishises gender essentialism without examining it. This is not to say there's anything wrong with that! We all have our kinks. But it makes me curious what those who aren't trying to critique anything get out of it (and all the biological determinism that comes with it).
