On second thought, scratch that, I refuse both tests. They're both equally stupid since every story is a world in itself.

this, you have to consider the stories themselves. something about soldiers on the battlefield in wwii? probably not going to have very many female characters in it, and that's okay. likewise, something like my little pony isn't going to have very many male characters, and that's okay too.

i think it's ridiculous to expect that every single story have an equal balance of male and female characters because it doesn't always make sense within the context of the story. i know i sure as hell don't worry about that when i write my own original stuff. hell, one of them doesn't have a single male character who appears in the story because it's set at a boarding school for girls.
