I don't think anyone would admit it in civilized company. If it makes you feel better, you wouldn't be alone. Not by a looooong shot.

I'm gonna be honest with you to make you feel better anon, I was like one of those typical yaoi fangirls when I was younger too. Nobody ever admits that in civilised company. (The Internet isn't civilised company, right?)

Not even close. ;D

(I was also one of those typical yaoi fangirls.)

You would've grown out of it eventually. Maybe. But why regret things that never happened?

I wasn't. Not because I was so much smarter or morally superior, but...how did all of you miss the angry rants about how unrealistic such things were? Even ten years ago they were a thing...

Hell, I probably read those even before I was yaoi fangirl.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I definitely was, and at an age I should've known better (I got into BL around 20/21 in college), and it took me a couple of years to be exposed to enough material in fandom to realize what was wrong with the mediocre or just plain BAD stuff out there.

It's easy to miss that stuff...if you aren't in fandom and are just a fan.

Hmm that's true. I was introduced to yaoi because of fandom, not the other way around like a lot of people probably were.

Still appreciated all the bad/unrealistic gay sex, lol.

I will never understan why some people dislike unrealism in something that was never supposed to be realistic in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
*understand
Ah, my quick typing.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
10 years ago they weren't so much a thing in the fandom areas that were posting those things. I mean, your average anime fanfiction archive didn't post that sort of thing, and reviews were sent directly to the author back then, not posted for everyone to read, at least on all the archives I was on.

... Wait, let me check my math...Okay, that was more like 14 years ago, but still.

I was kind of lucky in that I didn't end up heavily in a slash fandom until my mid to late twenties, by which point I was far out of my fangirl years. During my weeaboo years I was (luckily) in fandoms with a lower tendency to wank. Although I was never very into pornfic/pornart, so I'm not sure I would have ever fallen into that trap anyway.

That being said, a lot of people who are pretty great now used to be like that. We all have embarrassing things in our pasts.

...so? I get they're kinda annoying but why is this a horrible thing?

(I wasn't really one but eh, I bet I was still annoying.)

A long long time ago, I can still remember, when I loved Gravi and was one of those yaoi fans. (Okay not totally. Rape = love appalled me and I didn't get all the bottom/top fascination. But I still loved my yaoi and unfortunately hated some female characters because they got in the way of pure mansexing.)

We all (hopefully) get over it in our older years.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe, maybe not.

I shipped Shuichi with his best friend rather than Yuki when I was young and new to the whole yaoi thing. Because even though I didn't really have the knowledge or worldliness to know it was rapey, I still saw Yuki as a total jerk and knew something was just wrong there.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, this was my experience as well...

I wanted Shuichi to leave Yuki for Ryuuzaki, because I somehow knew that Yuki had faaaaar to many issues for poor Shuichi to handle. But I also shipped Touma->Yuki as a VERY guilty pleasure, so IDFK.

A guy being a jerk is being rapey? You must be one of those who thinks everything men do is rape.

Meh, I'm still (sort of) one of those yaoi fans. I know it's not real (hey, I'm gay irl after all) but it's more like a kink. Top/bottoms, dub or noncon, obsessive romance and angst. I like it, and I'm not sorry.

Granted, I don't really talk about it, and I am not interested in making friends with those hyperactive batshit crazy stereotypical yaoi fans. Even though on the inside, I kind of am one. lol

Anon, I think a lot of people have childhood mindsets they grow out of and get weirded out by in hindsight. I know I do. The important thing is that you realize what they are and change the way you think :)

*shrug* I got into it when I was thirteen, and yeah, I did get like that. And then I grew out of it. The opinions you form early on are not necessarily the ones you keep, and now I actually find 'yaoi' as a genre (with its seme-uke dynamics and rape-is-love and all that shit) appalling.

Heh, Gravitation fandom. What a trip down Memory Lane... One of my first ones.

About the secret: You're feeling guilty for something that didn't even happen, Anon. Let it go.

For the record, I got into m/m erotica just when puberty was hitting, and indeed was for a while one of those annoying fangirls who also talked with random Japanese words in between. And then I grew out of it. Not all the stuff you find appealing at 13 is still appealing at 25. Hell, I was mostly out of that when I was 15 already. It helped that I wanted to become a writer and by that time I was hanging out with an online group composed mostly of fic-writers: we all took our writing very seriously; and that included calling in bullshit at certain tropes.

I still like, once in a while, reading stuff with top/bottom dynamics and the likes, but I acknowledge it as fucked up and to be read as fantasy only; and there's no harm in fantasies. *le shrug*

Eh, a lot of people go through that before maturing and getting to know better. I know I was. And then I grew out of it. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2013-10-09 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand what's wrong with unrealistic. Yaoi isn't supposed to be realistic, it's a female fantasy.
Also I see the word "rapey" thrown around a lot for the stupidest reasons. Even when there's nothing really "rapey".
Get over yourself, OP.
