gender and random crushes

(Anonymous) 2013-10-08 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Today I realized I have a mad crush on this random tumblr person I follow. Then I realized I had no idea about what gender they identified as. Then I realized I don't even care. Then I thought "huh, I wonder if that type of thing matters to other people." And then I came here to ask.

If you find yourself crushing on someone online that you didn't know the gender of, would that matter? Would you stop liking them if you found out they were not the gender you are attracted to irl? Say you ID as straight and then find out this person is the same gender as you, how would you react?

Related, I wish I could think of a different term than "crush" but it's not lust or friendship and I can't think of a suitable alternative. Hmm.

It wouldn't matter to me, but I'm also bi asexual so...I probably don't count. But I also consider online crushes fun little going-nowheres so it's like it's exempt from reality.

This, at least as far as being being somewhere in the land of bi, and asexual. I actually have had online crushes go somewhere when I met the person offline though, so.

Same boat as above anon - I wouldn't care, but I'm asexual, dated mostly guys for most of my "dating" life, now have been with a woman for close to ten years, would not rule out going out with a guy again if we broke up, would also not mind if the next was another woman.

The thing that would concern me was whether or not they'd want or expect me to have sex with them, which is pretty much the only reason I *hadn't* dated other women prior to the ten-year relationship. :P

I think crush is a perfectly fine term! And uh... I wouldn't care either way, but I'm probably bi so I'm with anon on not being helpful in this situation...

And a crush is a very non-threatening thing, so I don't think it's that big a deal no matter your sexuality. (And sexuality can be fluid too, so... I say don't overthink it.)

I've seen 'squish' used to mean a friendship-crush, if that's what you mean.

for me, gender doesn't matter. I'm attracted to all lovely people regardless of gender.

I think it would but I've never been really attracted to someone I haven't met (and usually not anyone I haven't known for a while/become friends with to some degree).

hmm.

"Friendcrush" is totally a thing. I get them all the time.
