I am, um, not saying there aren't friendships like that? I have several girl friends who I hold hands with, cuddle, sleep in the same bed as as even kiss. and I'm American.

but it's not romantic. that's taking a word with a meaning, and saying it has the opposite meaning. what I have is very close friends.

Agreed. I am extremely close with some friends and have no problem hugging, sharing beds/etc with them. I would never use the term romantic though, because to me that implies that there IS sexual interest (and I'm putting this in a very general way, because obviously if someone's asexual they're going to have the romantic without the sexual).

To me romantic and close go together but not romantic and friendship, because it's like... opposite ends of the spectrum.

You can have close friendships and romantic relationships, but it seems impossible to add 'romantic' to friendship without taking it out of platonic and into relationship territory.

(And this is not to say that people cannot be best and or close friends with their lovers, because of course that's possible, just that close friends do not always equal romance and/or romantic interest.)
