She is presumably a POC in the comics and animated series. Maria's ethnicity has never been identified, but she's definitely darker than Cobie Smulders in other media.

My facial recognition skills suck. I thought she looked a bit like Cobie Smulders, then decided it wasn't her.

Also, I usually end up calling her Colbie Smoulders for some unknown reason.

I've read the comics. I always thought she was a white chick with dark hair. Where is anyone getting a POC from?

In the comics it's really not established (really all we know is she's from Chicago)



Though in some of the other media it does appear to be the case. Popular fanon is she's got at least some dark skinned latin in her.

What I'm really noticing there isn't the difference in skin tone (and hair and eye color), it's the difference in breast size.

As far as I know, her ethnicity has never been confirmed. She is often drawn with dark/low-toned skin, and her first name does have a strong Hispanic connotation in the US, so most people extrapolated that she has Latina/Hispanic origin of some sort. However, this is not canon, and as such she is sometimes drawn as looking incredibly white.

She's only been in the pilot. Which, while I did enjoy, suffered from "what-are-we-doing-oh-no-a-pilot"-itis. It was a pilot. Just relax and watch the show. She might come back later, but with how she's getting married in the last season of HIMYM right now, she's a bit busy.

I can see why you'd think that. Personally I really like it because I've seen the actress in other things and know how emotive and out there she can be, so I see it more as an acting choice to be stoic and in control at all times rather than wooden.

I think the most entertaining part of the show for me is trying to figure out reasons why people keep saying "Tahiti." My favorite theory so far is that I'm a deep-cover hypnotized Skrull, and the image of Coulson wearing a thong on a tropical beach is my trigger to start the doomsday plan.

Of course it has to be a banana hammock because it would be in character for Coulson to dig out bulletproof survival James Bond (1960s of course) from the SHIELD archives. Only a thong would offer the right mix of sexual arousal and hilarity to break through the deep hypnotic barriers that prevent me from becoming a genocidal green alien intent conquering Earth for the Skrull empire.

Well, that's a theory anyway.
