I remember re-reading that as an adult and definitely losing some of the love for the reasons you mention and then others. It just didn't hold up, which is sad because it used to be one of my favorites.

This is one of my favorite childhood books, but it's got to be 25 years since I've read it at least. Maybe I'll never re-read it and retain fond memories...
