Swearing in the Workplace Y/N

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I had some work as a temp lately at a company where I was told to dress "very corporate". Now, it as actually quite a friendly workplace, but what I did notice was that there was a lot of casual swearing going on - stressed out 'Fuck me's when something went wrong on the computer, a few 'Fucking hell's, that kind of thing. I didn't bother me in the least, but there was enough for me to note it. This was in Australia, btw.

The point is, what do you guys think of swearing in the workplace? Is it a professional no-no? Does it not matter to you at all? Does a bit of casual swearing show that it's a relaxed work atmosphere? Do you think it changes between countries/cultures?

Seems unprofessional to me, but I suppose it depends on the type of workplace. And I do think it depends on the culture/country.

I'm in the US in a small office. Personally, I find it a no-no. "BS" comes out a lot and my one boss will curse when he's angry, but other than that, the office as a rule tries to keep it very polite.

I'd be bothered if someone cursed a lot depending on the context, of course.

It's been like that in every office I've worked in. I usually don't engage because I want to make a good impression.

Some of those offices have been lovely, and some of them have been really toxic environments where the swearing doesn't bother me as much as the racism, homophobia, and sexual harassment.

SA, if this helps, I live in a part of my country that is often stereotyped as being very rude by the rest of the country.

I'm in the US. Over here, it seems like a 'no' in the offices I've worked.

Yep, this. Now, how much swearing people do during out-of-office breaks is something else entirely, but in the office? NO.

I work for a university in Britain in an office with about ten other people where students are free to come and go as they please and swearing, if overheard, would generally get a raised eyebrow from the manager, but certainly my little group of colleagues are comfortable with mouthing or whispering curses. I've got a mouth like a sailor, but we all generally apologise for them afterwards though and obviously in front of a student is a no-go.

Definitely depends on the workplace though - I worked for a nightclub for years before that though and swearing was just part of the culture, I guess?

I work on Capitol Hill and the clothes, etc, are business formal, everyone's supposed to keep in mind that they're representing their state/district, but everyone there curses like a sailor from morning to night.

It's politics, what're you gonna do ;)

Expect them to get their heads out of their asses for a start.

I don't really care for the most part. Only exception is if you work around younger kids.

Doesn't bother me but I try not to do it, at least not when actually in the workplace. Just seems unprofessional.

It may change between cultures, but here? It's a huge no-go. It's generally unprofessional and can, depending on the office, be grounds for getting fired if you do it constantly [bear in mind, this was an office that got a *lot* of a visitors.]

It depends. A little bit around the workplace is fine, I think, but I once worked at this place where my boss would lightly swear around clients. Not cool.

He would also make fun of the clients the minute they left the room, so... he was an all-around not-cool person.

I dunno, I work in IT and the profanities are flying from every direction - including our department boss - unless the university president or vice pres are present. XD We're a really laid-back department though. We're supposed to dress "business casual" at the minimum, but everyone knows it's pretty ridiculous, and we have been known to throw things over each other's cubicle walls, hang signs with the wrong names (including names that no one in the department actually has) on each other's cubicles, literally ride bikes into/through meetings, and make up silly cartoon mascots and acronyms for our assorted projects (one was actually internally referred to as HERPDERP for awhile, and I am currently designing an evil robot with a whip to serve as the personification for our project handling program).

Basically we are a bunch of geeks forced to wear button-down shirts and khakis instead of t-shirts with Star Trek references and worn-out jeans. As long as we get the work done and don't act like this in front of the public, no one with any authority cares. ;)

I didn't start swearing UNTIL I got to the workplace I'm in now. XD I tell my co-workers they turned me into a potty mouth.

Though we're a very self-contained department, so we obviously don't swear if we leave it to go up to the floors/or if nurses/higher-ups are in the department.

I work in a tech support call center. Basically, as long as you are not doing it in call, nobody really cares. And honestly, sometimes you gotta swear a little. Either cause the customers can be so unbelievable, or cause our network can be that shit. Nothing like losing a call log you have been working on (we don't have the ability to save our progress) and you are going to be monitored by cause the network decided to have another fit.

I work for a facility that's loud as fuck due to machinery and planes. So, when packages fall, hit a toe, you bang an arm into one, try to break jams and get conked by them, you'l hear some of us cursing a blue streak. Hell, my manager does it from time to time. It's supposed to be a "no-no," but depending on the manager, area, etc, it's one of those rules that gets waved away.

My boss and I swear during our conversations like, all of the time. It's kind of funny. Not around customers though.

I try not to, but I kind of slip (mostly in an 'oh shit' way rather than a 'fuck you' way) sometimes. It doesn't bother me personally if others do, but I kind of watch for others' reactions to swearing. But yeah, it always depends on the area and workplace.
