"Child-like" might be the better word to use if you're looking for a similar meaning minus the connotations.

Yeah, you're right. I looked up both words, and "childlike" seems much more positive than "childish."

Yeah, as far as I know it's specifically supposed to contrast "childish," (it has in every instance I've encountered it) so I'm glad to hear the standard hasn't shifted.
